The massive expansion of the Civic Campus Emergency Department
was completed in September 2006 thanks to more than $7 million in
donations by individuals and organizations in our community (government
funding covered the remaining $14 million). The Civic ER was the
first major Legacy Campaign project. It is now a state-of-the-art
facility that can provide emergency care to some 75,000 people a
year.
Visit the links below to see some of the highlights of our community’s
generosity:
The issue
- Originally built to accommodate 30,000 visits a year. In 2004,
there were more than 60,000 visits.
- Outdated equipment and cramped facilities hamper the Hospital's
ability to provide the best possible care in an emergency.
The solution
- A $21-million renovation project to double the capacity.
The results
- A spacious new waiting room with more privacy and natural light.
- A better work environment for Hospital staff.
- A new hospital-based hazardous material decontamination area—the
first of its kind in Canada.
- A new Trauma and Resuscitation area that is much larger, brighter
and is equipped with the latest technology.
- Short-term treatment area for those with less serious medical
problems.
- A new Emergent Care and Observation zone that includes a CT
scanner right in the ER... saving precious minutes of transit
in an emergency.
- A new Short Stay area that separates less urgent care from critical
needs for better patient intake and management.
- Play area, children's room and quiet rooms for people experiencing
a crisis.
- A new Regional Sexual Assault Treatment Centre.
