General Campus - Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research (Complete!)

The Ottawa Hospital took a leap into the future when the Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research opened in November 2006 at the General Campus. The Centre puts Ottawa on the map as one of the top five global centres for stem cell research, which holds much promise for treating and possibly curing diseases like cancer and diabetes.

The Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research was built and equipped with a total of $17.4 million in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, the Kresge Foundation, and many generous donors who gave to the project through The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

The issue

  • Stem cells have the potential to lead to a revolution in medicine; to treat and potentially cure fatal human diseases like Alzheimer's disease, muscular dystrophies, stroke and diabetes.
  • Scientists at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) need the proper tools and facilities to unlock this tremendous potential.

The solution

  • Construct a new 30,000-sq.ft. facility at the Hospital's General Campus.

The results

  • Ottawa is now at the leading edge internationally in the promising new field of stem cell research.
  • It is one of the largest research centres in Canada devoted to the study of stem cells.
  • Allow the OHRI to recruit internationally recognized scientists and clinicians.
  • A new hub for a broader stem cell research program already underway throughout the OHRI.
