TD BANK FINANCIAL GROUP FUNDS $100,000 FELLOWSHIP FOR STEM CELL
RESEARCH
(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) - The Ottawa Hospital Foundation
and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) announced today
the two recipients of the TD Bank Financial Group Fellowships. Dr.
Jennifer McCann and Dr. Enrique Muro
will receive $100,000 to support their stem cell research. The recipients
received their fellowships during a presentation today that gave
special guests an insider’s look at some of the research being
conducted by OHRI scientists. In addition to the presentation, the
event included a reception and virtual lab tour.
TD Bank has committed $500,000 over five years to support post-doctoral
research fellowships at the OHRI, the research arm of The Ottawa
Hospital. This grant will assist researchers, allowing them to continue
their life-saving work, which will have a direct impact both locally
and internationally.
“We’re proud to be investing in the innovative research
taking place here in Ottawa. By fostering ground-breaking research,
OHRI is enhancing the knowledge base in Canada and around the world.”
says Ron McInnis, Senior Vice-President, Ontario North and East
Region, TD Canada Trust. “At TD, we believe that our donations
are best spent investing in human capital and our Grants in Medical
Excellence help ensure that doctors at the top of their field, like
today’s recipients, have access to funds for research.”
Recent scientific advancement indicates that stem cell research
has the potential to revolutionize medicine. Scientists at the Research
Institute’s Centre for Stem Cell Research and Gene Therapy
envision the day when stem cells will be used to rejuvenate diseased
hearts, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Their efforts will go a
long way in developing novel therapies to treat, and potentially
cure, diseases such as Alzheimer's, muscular dystrophies, stroke,
diabetes and movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.
“With the recent and tragic passing of Christopher Reeve,
we are reminded of the importance of stem cell research,”
said Dr. Ron Worton, Dr. Ron Worton, CEO and Scientific Director
of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. “By recognizing the
work of Dr. McCann and Dr. Muro and the contributions they have
already made to stem cell research, we are championing his cause.
The fellowships that both will receive from TD Bank will support
their important work, further ensuring that the vast potential of
this research is actively pursued.”
The investment from TD Bank Financial Group goes toward the Foundation’s
five-year, $100-million Legacy Campaign, which is currently at the
$56-million mark. The Campaign goal is to raise funds within the
community to improve patient care and research at The Ottawa Hospital
and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
The Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s mission
