Gala Honours Research Excellence at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute
(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) - Two of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute's (OHRI) most respected researchers were honoured tonight
at the Gala for Research, an annual event to celebrate research
and to raise funds for the OHRI. This year’s gala, presented
by McCarthy Tétrault and Accenture, raised $130,000.
The Researcher of the Year Award went to Dr. Philip Wells for his
contribution to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of Deep
Vein Thrombosis (blood clots in the deep veins of the pelvis, legs
or arms). Dr. Roger Broughton won the Dr. J. David Grimes Research
Career Achievement Award for his research into sleep and sleep disorders
over the past four decades.
“The two scientists we are honouring tonight are excellent
examples of why the OHRI has solidified its reputation as a world-renowned
centre for medical research,” said Dr. Jack Kitts, President
and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, at tonight’s awards ceremony
at the Westin Hotel.
”The OHRI at The Ottawa Hospital is at the forefront of medical
research in Ottawa and across the country,” said Dr. Ron Worton,
CEO and Scientific Director of the OHRI. “The successes of
researchers like Drs. Wells and Broughton are helping to further
the understanding, prevention and treatment of the leading causes
of death and disability in our society today.”
The Gala for Research is an annual black-tie event to recognize
and support outstanding research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute,
