TELUS Employees Helping to Save Children's Lives
TELUS’ Ottawa Race Weekend Team raised
$33,000 for state-of-the-art pediatric trauma training program

(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) – A group of TELUS employees got
the opportunity this morning to see first hand how their support
is making a difference to thousands of children in our community
who need emergency care every year.
Doctors and nurses at the Emergency Department of the Civic
Campus of The Ottawa Hospital simulated a
dramatic trauma intervention using new, state-of-the-art
child mannequins purchased thanks to the support of local
TELUS employees, as part of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s
Ottawa Race Weekend fundraising
drive.
The mannequins are part of a new Pediatric Skills Lab Program created
thanks to funds raised by TELUS Team members and the TELUS Community
Board. The scope of the Program will be far-reaching and will provide
ongoing training to hundreds of emergency nurses, medical students
and residents in our region. An online companion to the Program
is also in the works.
Today’s demonstration formally kicked off TELUS’ 2007
fundraising efforts leading up to May 26-27 Ottawa Race Weekend.
TELUS’ goal for this year’s race is to surpass the $33,000
they raised in 2006.
“Every year, more than 3,000 children in need of urgent care
are rushed to the Civic ER by desperate parents who are not sure
if they’ll make it to CHEO in time,” said Dr. Janet
Nuth, Civic Emergency physician. “We cannot thank TELUS enough
for supporting the Pediatric Skills Lab and to help us ensure medical
staff – who are more used to seeing adult patients –
will be ready when an infant is brought to us for emergency care.”
“I’m so proud of our TELUS Team members,” said
Janet Yale, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs at TELUS.
“Their efforts will help our medical professionals save the
lives of countless children in our community.”
